# metapeel > Inspect and remove hidden metadata from common file formats in your browser. > metapeel is free to use. Files are processed locally and are never uploaded. ## About metapeel is a free browser-based metadata inspection and removal tool for photos, documents, videos, and audio files. It can reveal metadata such as EXIF fields, GPS coordinates, timestamps, camera details, document authors, and media tags before creating a cleaned copy. The tool has no accounts, subscriptions, advertisements, or paid feature tiers. Anyone may use every supported feature for free. People who want to help with ongoing development can make an optional one-time contribution through the Support page; contributing does not unlock features or change the service. ## How It Works 1. The user selects a file in the browser. 2. metapeel analyzes the file locally and displays the metadata it can detect. 3. The user creates and downloads a cleaned copy. 4. For multiple cleaned files, metapeel can prepare a ZIP download. File contents are not uploaded to metapeel or sent to a metadata-processing API. Image and document processing uses browser JavaScript and Web Workers. Audio and video processing uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. ## Key Features - **Local file processing** — File contents stay on the user's device. - **Metadata inspection** — Review detected metadata before cleaning a file. - **Media-preserving cleaning** — Supported image formats are modified without pixel re-encoding, while audio and video use FFmpeg stream copy where supported. - **Batch workflow** — Analyze, clean, and download multiple supported files. - **Free access** — No account, subscription, paywall, usage tier, or advertisement. - **Optional support only** — A one-time contribution is welcome but never required. ## Main Pages - [Main Metadata Remover](https://metapeel.com/) — Inspect and clean supported files - [Image Metadata Remover](https://metapeel.com/image-metadata-remover) — Remove EXIF, GPS, timestamps, and camera metadata from supported images - [Document Metadata Remover](https://metapeel.com/pdf-metadata-remover) — Remove author, date, and document properties from PDF and supported office files - [Video Metadata Remover](https://metapeel.com/video-metadata-remover) — Remove container metadata from supported video files without re-encoding - [Audio Metadata Remover](https://metapeel.com/mp3-metadata-remover) — Remove common media tags from supported audio files without re-encoding - [Why metapeel Is Free](https://metapeel.com/why-free) — Explains the free, browser-based model - [Support metapeel](https://metapeel.com/sponsor) — Optional one-time “buy me a coffee” contribution - [Sitemap](https://metapeel.com/site-map) — Human-readable map of tools, guides, policy pages, and crawler resources - [Privacy Guides](https://metapeel.com/blog) — Guides about file metadata and privacy - [Editorial Team](https://metapeel.com/blog/authors/metapeel-editorial-team) — How metapeel verifies guide claims, sources, limitations, and corrections - [About](https://metapeel.com/legal/about) — Mission and product principles - [Privacy Policy](https://metapeel.com/legal/privacy) — File processing and privacy practices - [Cookie Policy](https://metapeel.com/legal/cookies) — Cookie and browser-storage practices ## Guides - [How to Remove EXIF Data from Photos](https://metapeel.com/blog/remove-exif-data-photos) — Format-aware cleaning and verification for JPEG, PNG, WebP, and GIF - [How to Remove Metadata from PDF Files](https://metapeel.com/blog/remove-metadata-pdf-files) — Standard PDF properties, cleaning limits, hidden content, and verification - [How to Remove Metadata from Video Files](https://metapeel.com/blog/strip-metadata-videos) — Local FFmpeg remuxing, stream copy, and technical metadata boundaries - [How to Remove MP3 ID3 Tags and Audio Metadata](https://metapeel.com/blog/remove-mp3-id3-tags) — Audio tags, attachments, remuxing, and verification - [What Is EXIF Data?](https://metapeel.com/blog/what-is-exif-data-privacy) — EXIF fields, privacy triage, and platform caveats - [File Metadata Explained](https://metapeel.com/blog/complete-guide-file-metadata) — Cross-format map of metadata, supported cleaning, and hidden-content review ## Supported Formats ### Images - Metadata inspection and cleaning: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF - Metadata inspection only: TIFF and supported camera RAW formats, including DNG, CR2, NEF, NRW, ARW, RW2, ORF, PEF, SRW, and RAF ### Documents PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, ODS, and ODP ### Video MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, WMV, MPEG, and other FFmpeg-compatible containers accepted by the tool ### Audio MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC, and M4A ## Privacy and External Resources metapeel does not upload files or run advertising or product-analytics scripts.
